Q. What are the minimum requirements to teach at NUVHS?
All NUVHS teachers must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution, a valid teaching credential from the State of California in the appropriate area of instruction, and possession of (or highly reliable access to) a computer. Further, successful candidates will have experience teaching at the high school level (online teaching experience strongly preferred). For more information on how to apply, visit our Employment Opportunities page.
Q. Do NUVHS teachers need a computer at home?
A. NUVHS highly recommends that teachers have continuous access to a computer, preferably in the home.
Q. Is there a teacher for every NUVHS class?
A. Yes. NUVHS offers a variety of collaborative, teacher-led courses with a 25-1 student to teacher ratio maximum per virtual classroom. NUVHS teachers work closely with students in each course to provide guidance and frequent feedback as students progress through the curriculum.
Q. Will students need to be online at the same time as the instructor?
A. The majority of the courses will be conducted asynchronously, allowing students to participate at any time of the day. Some courses do require that students attend live chat sessions with their instructor and/or classmates. Times and dates are determined by the instructor.
Q. What is the difference between "asynchronous" and "synchronous" discussions?
A. Asynchronous discussions, or "threaded discussions," are intended for students to post messages at their leisure, or as otherwise instructed by their teacher. Synchronous discussions, or online "chats" are intended for all students and their instructor to be present to communicate at the "same time."
Q. Who can a teacher contact if he/she is having trouble with their online course?
A. If the trouble is related to course content, teachers should contact NUVHS at 1.866.DO.NUVHS (1.866.366.8847) and speak to the Manager of Curriculum and Instruction. Teachers can reset their passwords by calling the NUVHS help desk at 1.877.533.4733 or via e-mail at helpdesk@myonlinelogin.com.
